Sometimes I Just Need To Hear A Little Good News

I don’t like to watch TV anymore.  Haven’t enjoyed it in years.  We don’t have cable (our choice) and so I realize we are limited in TV stations.  It seems to me all that is on is blood and gore shows.  Crime, crime, crime.  Blood, blood, blood.  Vulgarity, vulgarity, vulgarity.  It sickens me.  For the same reason, I don’t like to watch the news either.  There’s rarely anything good on the news.  Again, it seems it’s all about crime…  Murder, robberies, burglaries, home invasions.  I don’t read the paper much at all anymore for the same reason.  Sorry mom, I know you’re rolling over in your casket hearing that.  To me, reading the newspaper is depressing.

Sometimes I just need to hear some good news.  We all do.  It doesn’t usually take much to make me happy.  It’s often the little things in life that make us happy.  So I think sometimes we have to pay attention to those little things in life that bring us good news or make us happy, and sometimes even go in search of them.  Usually we don’t have to look very far.  For me, it’s things like this:

  •  Waking up in the morning to realize I’ve made it to another day.  That’s good news.
  •  Seeing the sun shining in the window on a cold winter day.
  • Hearing my husband say, “Thanks honey, dinner was good!”
  • Neighbor dogs greeting me on my walk and acting like I’m the greatest thing they’ve seen all day.
  • Sleeping in on a Saturday morning.
  • Hearing the meteorologist say that there’s snow in the forecast.
  • Getting on the scale and seeing that the numbers have gone down!
  • Seeing my oldest son’s car pull in the driveway, home from college for a visit.
  • Seeing my youngest son’s car pull in the driveway after being out on a late night date and knowing that now, I can quit worrying, because he’s home safe.
  • Looking at old photo albums, realizing how blessed I am and that I really did grow up in the good ole days.
  • Hearing my husband say, “Let’s just go out to eat tonight.”
  • Going for a walk on a moonlit night.
  • Seeing deer in my backyard.
  • Curling up with a good book.
  • Hearing the dentist say, “All done!”
  • A nice long, hot bath.
  • Watching a couple of birds raising their babies.
  • Hearing the happy sounds of a cat purring.
  • Walking in the woods.
  • A good cup of hot coffee.
  • Hearing an old favorite song come on the radio.
  • Hearing my doctor say, “Your lab report looked great!”
  • Puppy breath.
  • Seeing a toothless baby grin.
  • Hearing a baby laugh.
  • Smelling the ocean and walking in the sand.
  • Not having to stand in a long line in Wal-Mart!
  • Completing a crossword puzzle.
  • An ice-cold bottle of Mt. Dew (Diet caffeine free Mt. Dew that is).
  • A hug from my kids.
  • A kiss from my husband.
  • Having lunch/dinner with my sisters.
  • Spending holidays with family.

I could go on and on but I’ll stop for now.  I love the song by Anne Murray called A Little Good News.  I especially love the lyrics.

 A Little Good News
Anne Murray
Written by Charles Black, Rory Bourke, and Thomas Rocco

Peaked at # 74 on the Pop chart in 1983 while hitting #1 on the Country chart

I rolled out this morning
Kids had the mornin’ news show on
Bryant Gumbel was talkin’ ’bout the fighting in Lebanon
Some senator was squawkin’ ’bout the bad economy
It’s gonna get worse you see, we need a change in policy

There’s a local paper rolled up in a rubber band
One more sad story’s one more than I can stand
Just once how I’d like to see the headline say
“Not much to print today, can’t find nothin’ bad to say”, because

Nobody robbed a liquor store on the lower part of town
Nobody OD’ed, nobody burned a single buildin’ down
Nobody fired a shot in anger, nobody had to die in vain
We sure could use a little good news today

I’ll come home this evenin’
I’ll bet that the news will be the same
Somebody takes a hostage, somebody steals a plane
How I wanna hear the anchor man talk about a county fair
And how we cleaned up the air, how everybody learned to care
Whoa, tell me

Nobody was assassinated in the whole Third World today
And in the streets of Ireland, all the children had to do was play
And everybody loves everybody in the good old USA
We sure could use a little good news today

Nobody robbed a liquor store on the lower part of town
Nobody OD’ed, nobody burned a single buildin’ down
FADE
Nobody fired a shot in anger, nobody had to die in vain
We sure could use a little good news today

What makes you happy?
