Since becoming an Empty Nester a few years ago, I decided one of the things I wanted to do was have regular date nights with hubby. We needed and wanted to get the focus back on our marriage relationship after raising two sons for 20+ years.
Adapting to an empty nest is turning out to be quite harder that I imagined. It’s a BIG change, especially if you aren’t quite ready for it (and I clearly wasn’t). The date nights have happened but they’ve been sporadic at best. Sometimes they’ve involved going out for dinner and a movie. Sometimes we go for a walk in the park. Our dates don’t have to be fancy or cost a lot of money. We’re not fancy folks and let’s face it– when you’re putting kids through college, money is tight.
Sometimes spontaneous date nights end up being the best. And that’s what happened here the other night. Hubby suggested that we go outside, light our rarely used fire-pit, and make some s’mores. So that’s what we did. We hauled the graham crackers, marshmallows, and Hershey’s chocolate bars out to the backyard. It had been years since I had even roasted marshmallows over an open fire. And who doesn’t love a good s’more from time to time? We’ve sure been enjoying that fire-pit on some of these cooler soon-to-be fall nights.
Sometimes, it’s all about enjoying the simple things in life. And sitting side by side holding hands with the one you love on a cool night staring into a warm orange, roaring, crackling fire….. well, it just doesn’t get much better than that.

Sounds like a lovely date night.
It was Marissa and we hope to do it again soon!
