My husband and I went for a late night dinner Saturday night at Captain D’s. We don’t eat there much, maybe once every 4 months or so, but we both just kinda like their fish. I usually get their fish and chicken meal.
When we entered and were approaching the front counter, there was a nice young man (I’ll call him “A”), who greeted us with a great big genuine smile and welcomed us. He was so polite, saying “Yes Ma’am, No Ma’am” and “Yes Sir, No Sir,” as he took my husband’s and my order.
I smiled and thought of this.
He took our order, smiling all the way, and making sure to call it back to us and asking us if there was anything else he could get us. He had a smile that could light up a room. He told us he’d bring our food out to us when it was ready and that we could take our seats.
“That young man sure was nice and pleasant, wasn’t he?” I commented to my husband as we slid into our booth. “I was just thinking the same thing,” he said. “He sure made us feel welcome didn’t he?” “Yes, he did,” I said.
So later, when the young man walked by our table to ask us how everything was and to see if we needed anything else, my husband complimented him on his kindness, his politeness. He thanked us and chatted with us while he cleaned some nearby tables. He told us he was new, and told us he just wanted to make our dining experience pleasant and help us in any way that he could and hoped we would come back and dine there in the future. We told him with people like him working there, we would for sure be coming back. He was just a very nice and impressive young man.
As we were leaving, the manager opened the door for us and escorted us outside. We complimented “A” to this manager and told him he had been great and served us well. That’s when the manager told us he was new (they both were) and that we had been the third customers to compliment “A” in the past hour! That actually did not surprise me at all. That says something. “We hope to hang on to him,” the manager told us.
I wish we would see more kindness and more politeness like this young man exhibited.
It kinda made our night.
Im happy that you said something to both A and the manager. It probably made both of them feel great.
I’m glad we said something too. It’s something I should try to do more often when it’s called for!! Thanks Mary.

Captain D’s!! We used to have them here, but that was a long time ago. I totally agree with you. A little kindness, politeness and common courtesy goes a long, long way. I wish more people paid attention to that. Hopefully “A” won’t lose that quality.
I remember the very first Captain D’s that opened in Nashville (it was actually called Mr. D’s)! That was a long time ago too! Yes, I hope that “A” will stay the way he is…. someone raised that boy right!!
