Ten Things You Should Never Say To Your Child

I came across this piece of paper while cleaning out a drawer recently.  I don’t remember where it came from.  When I read this list, my first thought was wow…. Are there really people who say these things to children?   Unfortunately, yes, there are.

Ten Things You Should Never Say To Your Child

  1. You’re stupid
  2. You’re worthless
  3. I wish you were never born
  4. I hate you
  5. You’re impossible
  6. Get away
  7.  You’re fat or ugly
  8. You’ll never amount to anything
  9.  Why Can’t you Be Like….
  10.  You’ll fail/You’re a failure

Is there anything you would add to this list?

  1. Reading this made me cringe. I grew up with an abusive stepfather and heard a lot of similar phrases. It’s something I’ll never forget.

I’m so sorry. I guess they are all pretty cringe-worthy. I One of my grandmothers used to say to me, “You’re not using your brains,” or “Try using your brains for once.” It really cut me deep because as a child, I WAS really trying and was really using my brain. I hated when she said that to me and vowed I would never say it to a kid of my own, or any kid for that matter.
